Negotiation and Argumentation as Mediating Mechanisms†

چکیده

An approach for analysing and modelling learning as the result of the interweaving of reasoning minds in verbal interaction ("dialogic learning") is described. It is argued that giving primacy to modelling dialogue in learning situations can establish requirements for Intelligent Tutoring Systems architectures and provide a means for understanding collaborative learning processes in humans and machines. Two specific and related types of dialogue are considered that are fundamental mediating mechanisms in learning : negotiation and argumentation. Modelling these mechanisms in learning dialogues show that a richer set of epistemic attitudes is required in order to understand cognitive change in students, and highlights metacognitive processes as means for coordination and control. "Without negotiation the dialogue is transformed into monologue, the function of the interlocutor being reduced to that of a simple receptor of the message." (Moeschler, 1985, p. 176). "... somebody corners me and proceeds to present me with an argument of great persuasiveness, of irresistible logic, step by step. I can think of nothing to say against any of the steps. I get to the conclusion and can think of no reason to deny the conclusion, but I don't believe it !" (Dennett, 1981, p. 308 ; [Dennett's italics]).

Advances in Argumentation-Based Negotiation

Argumentation-based negotiation (ABN) is a prevailing approach for automated negotiation. It is based on the exchange of arguments that allow an agent to acquire additional information about the other agents and the particular circumstances of the negotiation, and can be used for attacking or justifying offers. This is an important element in resolving conflicts that very often are due to the a...

A New Quantitative Trust Model for Negotiating Agents using Argumentation

In this paper, we propose a new quantitative trust model for argumentation-based negotiating agents. The purpose of such a model is to provide a secure environment for agent negotiation within multi-agent systems. The problem of securing agent negotiation in a distributed setting is core to a number of applications, particularly the emerging semantic grid computing-based applications such as e-...

An action-resource language for argumentation: the case of softwood lumber negotiation

We view a group problem as a resource allocation problem among involved parties, ana’ negotiation as the members’ act to protect, or better yet, to gain additional resources for themselves. Group members gather together to achieve a common goal. Yet, they are also stakeholders seeking to defend their own interest as well. As such, negotiation can be seen as an effort of all parties seeking to e...

A Comparative Study of Argumentation- and Proposal-Based Negotiation

Recently, argumentation-based negotiation has been proposed as an alternative to classical mechanism design. The main advantage of argumentation-based negotiation is that it allows agents to exchange complex justification positions rather than just simple proposals. Its proponents maintain that this property of argumentation protocols can lead to faster and beneficial agreements when used for c...

Tactics and Concessions for Argumentation-based Negotiation

Argumentation-based negotiation has gained increasing prominence in the multi-agent field over the last years. There is currently a long literature on the use of argumentation in negotiation and especially the modeling of negotiation protocols or decision making mechanisms. However the study of strategic issues that define the behavior of an agent during the negotiation has been largely neglect...
